Setting New Year Goals!

It’s that time of year again – “New Year, New Me”. It’s time to set new goals and make some small changes to improve your life and health. We all know that a lot of the time we aim too big and fail, so let’s try and be realistic and set some small achievable goals.

Tips to help you stick to your goals.

  1. Write them down – writing down goals can help you to achieve your goals more easily. Write them somewhere where you will see them regularly. Some useful places can be: on your phone screen saver, sticky notes around your office, in your diary, or on your fridge. Wherever or whatever works best for you.
  2. Tell someone – telling someone your goals and what you want to achieve can be a great way of keeping yourself accountable and you’re less likely to fail.
  3. Keep your goals short and realistic. Start small, you can always expand as you reach each goal. For example, if you want to increase your water intake, start your goal as “to increase water intake by 250mls each day”, then as you reach this you can increase it to your desired amount. This will keep your motivation higher as you will be achieving your long term goal but just in smaller sections.

4. Make a plan – again, writing this plan down will help you reach your new year goals. Include dates as this will help you to stay motivated and improve your determination to reach your goal. If your goal is to start exercising more, write down the days you will exercise and what you will do during this time. This will help you stay on track and reduce the chances of not going ahead with the plan because “you are tired” or just “not feeling it”. Pre-booking exercise classes in advance can really help as you are less likely to cancel if it is already booked.

5. Keep your goals small – try not to overload or overwhelm yourself by choosing too many goals. Stick with 3 realistic and achievable goals to begin with. Remember, you can always add more (goals and changes can be set at any time of the year, not just January).

Some ideas for New Years Resolutions:

  • Increase your fruit and vegetable intake by 1 portion a day.
  • Try a new food once a month.
  • Increase your fluid intake by 250mls
  • Go for a walk 3 times a week.
  • Go for a run once a week.
